Labia majora augmentation with hyaluronic acid is a non-surgical treatment that aims to restore volume to the outer lips of the vulva when they have become lax or deflated with age, menopause, pregnancy or weight loss. It is an outpatient treatment, and the result is temporary and reversible. Dr. María del Carmen Martínez (Peruvian Medical College license CMP 42467) recommends it only after an evaluation consultation.

What the treatment does
Over time the labia majora lose fat and collagen, just like the face. Medical literature calls this labia majora hypotrophy. For some women it is simply another body change; for others it brings discomfort with clothing, a feeling of loose skin or lower confidence. The goal is your comfort, not an "ideal" look: genital anatomy varies widely and that variety is normal.
Who is a good candidate?
- Laxity or wrinkling of the labia majora with age or after menopause.
- Volume loss after pregnancy or significant weight loss.
- Volume asymmetry between sides.
- Preference for a non-surgical, reversible option.
If the concern is excess skin or tissue, labiaplasty is usually the right option. The evaluation defines which procedure fits you, including whether no treatment is best.
It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active genital infection, with known allergy to the product, or with certain conditions that affect healing or immunity.
How it is done
- Evaluation consultation: your goals, an examination, and a clear explanation of benefits, limits and risks.
- Preparation: cleansing of the area and anesthesia as decided at the evaluation.
- Injection: small, symmetrical amounts of hyaluronic acid with fine needles or cannulas. Product, technique and amount are decided at the evaluation.
- Follow-up: a check-up to review the result.
Recovery
There are no incisions or stitches, so most women return to daily routine soon. Swelling, tenderness and some bruising are common for a few days. Dr. Martínez gives specific instructions on exercise, intercourse and swimming after the treatment.
Risks and the evidence
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lists bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness and itching as common filler side effects; lumps, infection and allergic reaction as less common; and accidental injection into a blood vessel as a rare but serious risk. The FDA has approved hyaluronic acid fillers for the face, lips, cheeks, chin and back of the hand; use in the labia majora is off-label.
A 2016 series of 54 women (Fasola and Gazzola, Aesthetic Surgery Journal) reported favorable results, but a 2017 systematic review in the same journal (Jabbour et al.) noted there is no standardized approach and evidence is limited. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) advises that high-quality data on cosmetic genital procedures are lacking.

Frequently asked questions
What is labia majora augmentation with hyaluronic acid?
It is a non-surgical treatment in which hyaluronic acid, an absorbable filler, is injected into the labia majora (outer lips of the vulva) to restore volume and smooth loose or wrinkled skin. It is an outpatient treatment; setting, anesthesia and needle or cannula are decided after a personal medical evaluation.
Who is a good candidate?
Healthy adult women with volume loss of the labia majora due to age, menopause, pregnancy or major weight loss that affects their comfort or confidence. If the concern is excess skin or tissue, labiaplasty is usually the right option instead of filler.
Is hyaluronic acid FDA-approved for the genital area?
No. The FDA has approved hyaluronic acid fillers for facial wrinkles and for adding volume to the lips, cheeks, chin and back of the hand; use in the labia majora is outside those approved indications. Published studies are small and mostly retrospective, which Dr. Martínez discusses openly before you decide.
How long do results last?
Results are temporary because hyaluronic acid is gradually absorbed, so touch-ups are needed to maintain them. Duration varies with the product, the amount used and each patient, and is estimated at your evaluation.
What are the risks?
According to the FDA, the most common filler side effects are bruising, redness, swelling, pain and itching; less common are lumps, infection or allergic reaction, and the rarest but most serious is accidental injection into a blood vessel. A trained physician should perform the treatment.
Can it be reversed?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed.
How much does it cost in Lima?
There is no published price. It is quoted after the evaluation consultation, based on the amount of product needed and whether it is combined with another procedure, and may vary depending on the medical assessment.
