Botulinum toxin is the treatment of choice to soften dynamic wrinkles between the brows, on the forehead and around the eyes (crow's feet). A 15-minute session refreshes your expression for 4 to 6 months.
Botulinum toxin is a treatment that softens dynamic wrinkles between the brows, on the forehead and crow's feet. It temporarily relaxes the muscle at the injection site. It is applied in the office, without anesthesia, after assessing each patient's muscle strength. Your evaluation takes place in Lima with Dr. María del Carmen Martínez, plastic surgeon.

Botulinum Toxin
The pharmacological effect of botulinum toxin takes place at the neuromuscular junction. In this transition zone between the peripheral nerve and the muscle, acetylcholine is released, a neurotransmitter needed for muscle contraction. Botulinum toxin acts locally (at the injection site) by blocking the release of acetylcholine, producing temporary muscle paralysis. The end effect is a temporary chemical denervation at the neuromuscular junction without causing any physical damage to nerve structures.
In diluted form, it is one of the treatments that delivers the best results to eliminate wrinkles, or treat rhytidosis. This form of botulinum toxin, once injected with an extra-fine needle into the muscle beneath the skin of the area to be treated, works by relaxing and inhibiting muscle movement. The aim of this effect is to make wrinkles disappear and give the skin a more youthful look. Its effect is temporary, lasting 3 to 6 months, after which the dose must be renewed. Side effects such as allergic reactions, facial stiffness or nausea have rarely been reported.
It's a nearly painless treatment that requires no recovery time or special care, and unlike other skin rejuvenation treatments, there's no problem exposing your skin to the sun.
There are misconceptions, caused by other practitioners' misuse of the toxin, about how much toxin each patient needs. Toxin comes in 100 IU and 50 IU vials; however, this does not mean the personal dose is 50 IU. After a personalized evaluation to determine the extent of wrinkles and strength of muscle contraction in each patient, Dr. Martínez determines the total number of units to use.
The toxin leaves no marks on the skin, no dents and no lumps.

Treatable facial areas
- Between the brows — the classic “frown lines.”
- Forehead — horizontal lines from raising the eyebrows.
- Crow's feet — wrinkles around the eyes when you smile.
- Perioral lines — “barcode” lines above the upper lip (microdosing).
- Bruxism and dimpled ("orange peel") chin — relaxation of the masseter or mentalis muscle.
- Chemical brow lift — to raise the tail of the eyebrow without surgery.
How it's applied
It's an in-office outpatient procedure, without anesthesia, using an ultra-fine needle. Dr. Martínez assesses muscle strength and wrinkle pattern to determine the exact units per point, not per vial. This avoids the “frozen” or asymmetric look so common with standardized doses. The session lasts 15 to 20 minutes and the patient returns to their activities right away.
When you see the results
The effect begins between day 3 and 5, with the full result at 14 days. It lasts 4 to 6 months on average; after several well-spaced sessions the muscle partially atrophies and the effect lasts longer each time. A touch-up every 4–5 months is recommended for maintenance.

Frequently asked questions
What is botulinum toxin?
It's a purified neuroprotein that temporarily relaxes the facial expression muscles, softening dynamic wrinkles (the ones that appear when you make facial expressions).
How long does the effect last?
Between 4 and 6 months depending on the person and the area. With repeated treatments the effect tends to last longer because the muscle partially atrophies.
How soon are results visible?
The effect begins between day 3 and 5, with the full result at 14 days.
Is it painful?
The injections use an ultra-fine needle; discomfort is minimal, comparable to a mosquito bite.
Does it have side effects?
Very rare when applied by a specialist. The most common is mild bruising at the injection site. Dr. Martínez adjusts the units for each patient to avoid a “frozen” look or asymmetry.
Can I resume my activities right away?
Yes. We only recommend not lying down or massaging the area for 4 hours, and avoiding intense exercise that day.
Who should not get botulinum toxin?
Pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with neuromuscular diseases (myasthenia gravis, ALS) or a known allergy to the product.
How much does it cost?
From $300 USD per area (frown lines, forehead or crow's feet). Combined-area packages available at consultation.
