Chin augmentation projects the chin forward to balance the profile when the chin is recessed (retrogenia). It's done with a solid silicone implant custom-sized, through an intraoral approach (no visible scar) in under an hour, and the result is immediate and permanent.
Chin augmentation (mentoplasty) is the surgery that projects the chin forward to balance the profile when the chin is recessed (retrogenia). A solid silicone implant is placed through the inside of the mouth, with no visible scar. It is often combined with rhinoplasty. Your evaluation takes place in Lima with Dr. María del Carmen Martínez, plastic surgeon.

What is chin augmentation (mentoplasty)?
It's the surgery that corrects a receding chin (retrogenia) by projecting the chin forward. This is achieved by placing a solid, biocompatible medical-grade silicone implant, made in different sizes and shapes to fit each patient's anatomy.
The preferred approach is intraoral (inside the mouth, in the groove between the gum and lower lip): it leaves no visible scar.
Why does it balance the whole face?
A projected chin makes the nose look smaller without touching it, defines the jawline and visually reduces a double chin. It is one of the procedures with the best "aesthetic impact / invasiveness" ratio:
- Restores harmony to the profile (rule of facial thirds)
- Reduces the look of a short neck or false double chin
- Defines the cervicomental angle
- Strengthens the character of a male face without masculinizing a female one
Implant types and techniques
- Solid silicone implant: the most widely used, anatomical, several sizes. Reversible.
- Custom 3D implant: designed from the patient's CT scan, indicated for significant asymmetries.
- Bony mentoplasty (osteotomy): when the chin is also vertically short; major maxillofacial surgery.
- Hyaluronic acid augmentation: a non-surgical alternative for a slight touch-up; lasts 12-18 months.
When is it combined with other procedures?
Chin augmentation enhances the results of other facial surgeries:
- + Rhinoplasty: the most requested "profile" combination — both changes reinforce each other for a harmonious result
- + Buccal fat removal: defines the lower third of the face
- + Submental liposuction: removes the double chin and defines the neck-chin angle
- + Neck and facelift: in older patients, it dramatically improves the contour
Recovery and aftercare
- Day 1-3: peak swelling, soft, cold diet, sleep semi-upright
- Day 4-7: back to the office with slight visible swelling
- Week 2: check-up, removal of absorbable stitches if any
- Weeks 3-4: normal diet, light cardio
- Months 1-2: the implant “settles”; a natural result becomes visible
- Month 3: stable, permanent final result

Frequently asked questions
How much does a mentoplasty cost in Lima?
At Dr. Martínez's practice, chin augmentation with an implant costs from S/ 9,000 (≈ $2,400 USD) and includes surgeon's fees, anesthesiologist, accredited operating room, medical-grade silicone implant, pre-op tests and follow-up visits.
Can the implant be felt or does it move?
No. Modern implants are anchored to the periosteum (the layer covering the chin bone) and become fully integrated. They cannot be felt to the touch under normal conditions and do not move during daily activities or contact sports.
Is it a painful surgery?
No. Post-operative pain is mild to moderate and is well controlled with oral painkillers for 3-5 days. Most patients report more discomfort than pain during the first week.
Are there scars?
Not visible. The intraoral approach (preferred) leaves no external mark. If, as an exception, a submental approach is used, a 1.5 cm scar remains hidden in the crease under the chin.
Is it reversible?
Yes. The implant can be removed or replaced in a simple surgery at any time. It does not damage bone or surrounding tissue, which makes it one of the most conservative procedures in facial surgery.
Does it improve a double chin?
Indirectly, yes: projecting the chin stretches the cervicomental angle, so the double chin looks smaller. If the double chin is due to actual fat, it is combined with submental liposuction in the same surgery.
How long does the result last?
It's permanent. The implant is made of certified medical-grade silicone that doesn't degrade over time. The result lasts a lifetime barring severe trauma.
Can both men and women have it?
Both. In men, the goal is a squarer, more projected chin (reinforcing masculinity). In women, a subtler, rounder projection (harmony without masculinizing). Size and shape are decided during the consultation.
