What is an arm lift?
It's surgery to reshape the arm: it removes loose skin and, when there is fat, the fatty tissue as well. Indications:
- Post-bariatric with sagging arm skin
- Significant weight loss (>20 kg)
- Severe aging with genetic laxity
- Unable to wear short sleeves because of visible loose skin
- Chafing and dermatitis on the inner arm
Types of arm lift
- Mini arm lift: upper third only, scar hidden in the armpit. Indicated for mild laxity.
- Vertical inner brachioplasty: scar from armpit to elbow on the inner arm. The most common technique for moderate-to-severe laxity.
- Extended brachioplasty: includes the side of the chest. Indicated for post-bariatric patients with laxity along the sides.
- Combined with liposuction: adds contour by reducing fat in addition to tightening the skin.
When is it indicated?
The objective indicator is the pinch test: with the arms held out at 90°, if pinching the inner side lifts >4 cm of loose skin, surgery is indicated. Other signs:
- «Bat wings» visible with arms extended
- Chafing and chronic dermatitis on the inner thighs
- Unable to wear tops or sleeveless dresses
- Asymmetry between the two arms
How is it different from liposuction?
- Arm liposuction: removes fat, not skin. Indicated when the skin has good elasticity.
- Brachioplasty: mainly removes skin, not fat. Indicated when the skin is loose.
- Combined: lipo + brachioplasty in the same procedure when there is fat AND loose skin.
Recovery step by step
- Day 0-3: compression garment 24/7 from hand to shoulder, drains for 2-4 days
- Day 4-10: drain removal, arms elevated while sleeping
- Weeks 2-3: stitches removed, back to the office
- Weeks 3-6: light cardio (no weights), compression garment 18 h/day
- Months 2-3: upper-body weights, very gradually

Are the scars noticeable?

How long does the result last?
Many years (10+) if you keep a stable weight and exercise. Significant weight loss or gain can alter the contour and require touch-ups.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
Yes, frequently: + brachioplasty + thigh lift (in post-bariatric patients) + lateral chest lipo. The most complete combination is an upper + lower «body lift» in post-bariatric patients.
When can I go back to the gym?
Walking from day 2. Cardio without using the arms at 4-6 weeks. Lower-body weights at 6 weeks. Upper-body weights only at 10-12 weeks.
Does the surgery reduce sensation?
During the first week there is numbness (hypoesthesia) on the inner arm that gradually resolves within 3-6 months. Permanently reduced sensation is very rare.
Does it treat arm lipedema?
Partially. Lipedema is a multifactorial disease. Brachioplasty + liposuction can improve contour and the feeling of heaviness, but it is not a cure for lipedema.
