Gynecomastia Surgery
It can also be caused by hyperestrogenism resulting from liver disease such as cirrhosis, since the liver is unable to metabolize estrogens. Men undergoing estrogen treatment may develop breast-shaped fat deposits, known as pseudogynecomastia, although it is common for true breasts to develop, which is called gynecomastia. This breast condition is more common in males. Obese men also tend to develop pseudogynecomastia, which usually occurs from puberty, around age 12 or 14, until age 20 or 21.
Male patients with unilateral or bilateral breast enlargement who have previously ruled out endocrine or liver disease and tumors, and who are past puberty, may undergo resection of this tissue.
Causes and diagnosis of gynecomastia
Gynecomastia can appear due to hormonal imbalance (excess estrogen or testosterone deficiency), liver or thyroid diseases, the use of certain medications (anabolic steroids, antidepressants, antihypertensives), or pseudogynecomastia caused by fatty tissue buildup in overweight patients. The surgery combines liposuction of the fat around the gland with direct removal of the glandular tissue through a small periareolar incision (at the edge of the areola). The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, it is outpatient and the patient goes home the same day wearing a male compression vest.
Post-op and recovery
Wearing the compression vest is mandatory for 4–6 weeks. Patients can return to desk work after 5–7 days and light physical activity at 4 weeks. Periareolar scars are virtually invisible one year after surgery.
