What is blepharoplasty?
It's cosmetic eyelid surgery. It corrects the signs of aging that give you a chronically tired look even when you're well rested:
- Drooping upper eyelid (dermatochalasis)
- Fat bags in the lower eyelid
- Pronounced tear trough (deep under-eye hollows)
- Wrinkled skin in the crow's feet area
- A «sad» or «tired» look
Types of blepharoplasty
- Upper blepharoplasty: removes excess skin and, if needed, fat from the upper eyelid. The scar is hidden in the eyelid crease.
- Lower blepharoplasty: removes or repositions the fat bags and tightens the skin. It can be transconjunctival (no external scar) when there are only bags without excess skin.
- 360° blepharoplasty: upper + lower in a single procedure. A more harmonious result.
- Canthopexy + blepharoplasty: reinforces the outer corner of the eye in patients with a drooping canthus. Indicated in severe aging.
Who is it indicated for?
It is most commonly indicated from age 40, but people with a family history of eye bags or droopy eyelids have it done from their 30s. Other indicators:
- A feeling of heavy eyelids at the end of the day
- Makeup that «hides» in the crease
- Reduced peripheral vision due to excess skin
- Bags that don't improve with creams or rest
- Repeated comments like «you look tired»
Technology and technique
Dr. Martínez uses a fat-preservation technique instead of the classic aggressive resection: she repositions the fat compartments rather than removing them. The result is more natural, avoids the “hollow” look typical of older blepharoplasties and keeps the face youthful over the long term.
Recovery step by step
- Day 1-3: ice on the area, sleep semi-upright, mild pain. Visible bruising around the eye (normal).
- Day 4-7: follow-up for suture removal (most are absorbable). Residual swelling visible.
- Week 2: back to the office with camouflage makeup.
- Weeks 3-4: light cardio, no heavy lifting.
- Months 1-3: the pink scar gradually fades. Natural result visible.
- Months 6-12: scar almost invisible. Stable final result.

Frequently asked questions
How much does blepharoplasty cost in Lima?
At Dr. Martínez's practice, blepharoplasty costs from S/ 8,000 (≈ $2,200 USD) for upper or lower eyelids alone, and from S/ 13,500 for 360° (upper + lower). It includes surgeon's fees, anesthesiologist, accredited operating room and follow-up.
Are there visible scars?
Not visible under normal conditions. The upper scar is hidden in the eyelid crease, the lower one just below the lashes. At 6-12 months they are practically imperceptible.
How long does the result last?
Between 10 and 15 years for most patients. Gravity keeps working, but the descent starts from a higher position. A mini touch-up with radiofrequency or hyaluronic acid every 5-7 years enhances the result.
When can I wear makeup again?
From day 10-14, once the stitches are out and the scar has sealed. During the first month, avoid waterproof products that require rubbing to remove.
Is it very painful?
No. Most patients report more discomfort (a feeling of tightness, mild stinging) than actual pain. It is controlled with oral pain relief for the first 2-3 days and eases substantially after that.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
Yes, frequently: + facelift, + rhinoplasty, + under-eye fat transfer, + Full Face. The most requested combination is blepharoplasty + neck and facelift for complete rejuvenation in a single surgery.
Are there risks to vision or of watery eyes?
In experienced hands they are very rare. The most common is temporary dry eye for 4-8 weeks (treated with artificial tears). Serious risks (eyelid eversion, residual ptosis) are <0.5% with proper technique.
