The hair transplant with the FUE technique reimplants the patient's own follicular units into balding areas. Dr. Martínez achieves a 100% graft survival rate and allows up to 2,000 units per session (≈ 6,000 follicles).
The FUE hair transplant reimplants the patient's own follicular units into areas without hair. It's for men and women who want to regain hair density. The specialist evaluates whether the case can be reversed with drug treatment alone or whether a transplant is needed. Your evaluation is in Lima with Dr. María del Carmen Martínez, plastic surgeon.

Hair loss is a problem increasingly seen in younger men. Testosterone is known to be the main cause of this problem. Treatment should be pharmacological and surgical at the same time. The hair transplant Dr. Martínez performs uses the FUE method. The technique and selection of follicular units ensure a 100% graft take. All patients treated with a hair transplant at the clinic are happy with their results. Our method allows 2000 units per session, corresponding to approximately 6000 follicles.
Hair loss is caused by different factors. The main cause is androgenetic alopecia, which presents with a male-pattern progression, mainly a receding hairline and concentric loss from the crown whorl.
Once hair loss begins, we must stop it from progressing, which is why hair loss treatment is bimodal. Depending on the stage of baldness and the rate of hair loss, a drug treatment is developed to halt the loss of follicles and, in advanced cases, to redensify or fill in bald areas with an autologous hair transplant.
The clear answer to this question depends on the extent of hair loss and the number of bald areas with no evidence of remaining miniaturized follicles. This is something the specialist must evaluate, deciding whether the case could be reversed with drug therapy alone or whether an autologous transplant is needed. However, it has been shown that multi-therapy combining oral drug therapy, topical therapy and mesotherapy together with autologous follicular unit transplantation achieves the best result.
There are currently two hair micro-transplant techniques. Both use the principle of the follicular unit. Hair grows in follicular units. Each follicular unit can consist of 1 to 6 hairs, each with its own bulb. The current concept of hair microsurgery is transferring Follicular Units from an area resistant to hair loss (occipital, temporal) to a recipient area that has lost hair. Both techniques, FUE (FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION) and FUSS (FOLLICULAR UNIT STRIP SURGERY), follow exactly the same principles. The difference between them lies mainly in the method used to extract the follicular units to be implanted. The FUSS method has been refined over many years and has given us excellent results in the recipient area. However, a scar may always remain in the donor area, which could be visible in many men who like to wear their hair short.

FUSS technique — Scalp strip
- A strip of hair is removed from the occipital region of the scalp.
- It does not require shaving the whole head, only the area where the strip is removed and the area where the grafts will be placed.
- The follicular units are carefully dissected from the excised strip.
- Implantation is done unit by unit, exactly the same as with the FUE method.
- The incision is closed with a trichophytic technique so the scar isn't visible.
FUE technique — Individual follicular units
- Individual follicular units are extracted from the donor area, ready to be implanted.
- Requires shaving the entire scalp.
- Implantation is done unit by unit.
- No visible scar is left.
The FUE technique was developed to avoid leaving a scar in the donor area. It has now become the technique of choice worldwide for hair micro-transplantation.
The science of hair micro-transplantation is based on moving loss-resistant hair from the back of the head (nape) to sensitive areas. The dominance of this transplanted hair does not change over time. However, if there were an overall reduction in follicular density in the donor area, this hair would not be suitable for transplant. In those cases, the first choice is medication and mesotherapy.
The main cause of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia. However, there are also scarring alopecias caused by immune activity and physical damage. Each case must be evaluated thoroughly when it does not follow a defined androgenetic pattern, and the treatment is essentially the same, with modifications as appropriate.
Scalp scars are treated with FUE transplantation. Although it is an area of fibrous tissue with poor blood supply, the grafts take at low density and improve the scar's vascularization. A second transplant can be performed once the initially implanted follicular units have been seen to grow.
Comprehensive hair loss treatment
A hair transplant alone doesn't stop the progression of androgenetic alopecia. That's why Dr. Martínez complements the procedure with a bimodal treatment: oral drug therapy (finasteride/dutasteride), topical therapy (minoxidil) and scalp mesotherapy with growth factors. This combination stops hair loss, redensifies miniaturized areas and maximizes the lifespan of the transplant.

Frequently asked questions
What technique does Dr. Martínez use?
FUE technique (Follicular Unit Extraction) with a 100% graft take rate in patients with viable follicles.
How many units per session?
Up to 2,000 follicular units, equivalent to approximately 6,000 hairs per session.
Is the procedure painful?
No. It is performed under local anesthesia plus light sedation. The patient can read, watch a show or listen to music during the 6–8 hours the session lasts.
When will I see the final results?
Growth begins at 3 months. The full result is seen at 12 months, when the follicles complete their adaptation cycle.
Is there a visible scar?
No. The FUE technique leaves no linear scar, only extraction points that are imperceptible when shaved or with short hair.
Does transplanted hair fall out again?
No. The donor hair comes from the occipital area (resistant to androgenetic hair loss) and keeps that resistance after the transplant. It is permanent.
Do I need additional treatment?
Yes. We recommend complementing it with oral and topical medication and mesotherapy to stop the loss of native, non-transplanted follicles.
How much does a hair transplant cost?
It is calculated per follicular unit and according to the area to be treated. Request a personalized evaluation to learn the right plan for your case.
