What are buccal fat pads (Bichat's fat pads)?
They are deep fat pads in the cheek, within the buccinator muscle. They serve a function during infant breastfeeding, but in adults they can remain prominent due to genetics, not excess weight. Characteristics:
- Can only be removed surgically (they do not respond to exercise or diet)
